Standard Disclaimer

I don't own these characters. That belongs to various mega corps, like Warner and MGM and a whole bunch of other people, not least, Kathryn Morris and Amanda Tapping.

I'm making no money from this.

They just took my brain over for a bit. While I can't entirely promise to play nice with them, I do intend to patch them up before I put them back in the toy box, and maybe try and leave them a little happier than they started.

Author's notes

First venture into the Cold Case genre, but it looks like this is going to be a long one.

Thanks to Christy for her beta reading work.

Prologue

Philadelphia

Five months ago, it had been a dead end. No matter how sure they were in their guts that this man had killed repeatedly, there was no substantial evidence that they could take to court, so they had to let him go. That he was clearly laughing at them did nothing to improve the bad taste he left as they watched him walk out of the squad room.

Still, you work the numbers. Some you win, some you lose.

Lilly Rush didn't give up that easily. Too many women had died, too many families had been shattered. And they were still waiting for justice.

As the time had passed, the day to day grind had moved this case out of her immediate view. So, it was a complete shock to find the note on her desk one sweltering August morning.

She was sweating despite her lightweight suit. Strands of hair were plastered darkly to her forehead and neck and her gun was an annoyance on her belt. She held onto her iced coffee like a lifeline, but all that did was make it melt. Not that it was helping her feel cooler, or more awake. Sleep was hard to come by in the sultry nights, between the heat and the drone of the air conditioning unit.

The squad room was no cooler than it was outside. If anything, it was warmer, but it offered a haven in which she could discard her suit jacket. Slinging it over her chair, she sat down. Her desk was a mess of archive material, weigted down with mugs so that only the corners moved in the desultory breeze that passed for air con. In amongst all the yellowed, aging paperwork, she nearly missed the new note.

"He's re-appeared. Colorado Springs PD."

It would mean nothing to the wrong eyes, but to Lilly Rush it meant everything. Abandoning her coffee to a pool of condensation, she headed for Stillman's office.

Colorado Springs

It had taken him some time to find a new city, but when he'd arrived here, he knew it was right. The military bases gave the area a large floating population of shift workers, so it was unlikely that anyone would pay attention to his nocturnal habits. The wilderness areas surrounding the city were even better for his game than back East. Lots of good places to run. The seasonal hunting population made sure there were any number of specialist shops to supply his needs.

The real clincher was the vacancy with the local PD. He had the experience, and a clean record. There was no reason not to hire him.

Now, he had time to select a new challenge. Someone who'd ring bells all the way back to Philadelphia. He'd meant what he said about taking Lilly Rush hunting.

Yes, he had a little time before the hunter reappeared and it was time for another bitch to run and to die.
